Microsoft to buy Nokia handset division for $7.2 billion

Yet this latest move, acquiring the mobile division of Nokia, probably says more about both organisations as they try to find a role in a Google-Apple world sprinkled with plenty of other new players. Microsoft is to buy Nokia Oyj’s phone business and license its patents for Euro 5.44 billion ($7.2 billion), making its boldest foray yet into mobile devices.

The announcement sees the return of executive Stephen Elop back into the fold and is expected to complete early next year.

Nokia chief Elop, a former Microsoft executive, will return as Microsoft’s board ponders a successor to current CEO Steve Ballmer, who will depart sometime in the next 12 months after initiating a reorganization intended to transform the software company into a devices and services group in the mould of Apple.
